What is Safe Zone?

Safe Zone is a program designed to:

  • Educate people about sexual orientation and gender identity/expression issues.
  • Create a visible network of Allies to provide support to the NDSU lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and questioning (LGBTQ) community.
  • Provide accurate information about sexual orientation and gender identity/expression diversity, issues, and resources within the community.

How can I be an Ally?

Learn. Attend our Safe Zone Ally training sessions to learn more about gender and sexual diversity. We offer 3 levels of training throughout the year with opportunities to sign a pledge to be an NDSU Safe Zone Ally.  Find more information by clicking the link for Training Descriptions to the left.

Speak Out. Voicing your support for the LGBTQ people is powerful. Whether you are challenging a stereotype, correcting a misrepresentation or merely voicing your support for a lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender friend, relative or colleague, you can make change happen.

Become Active in a local, state or national LGBTQ organization. The Safe Zone website includes listing of many local, regional, and national organizations that you can join to keep current on important issues facing the LGBTQ community - and how you can be an Ally.

Be a Good Listener. Many LGBTQ people feel isolated and alone, and would greatly benefit from having someone to talk to. Being vocally supportive shows others that you are open to having further dialogue.

Get Involved. There are many ways to get involved with LGBTQ community at NDSU and in the Fargo-Moorhead community. Contact us for more ideas.
